Visakhapatnam: The dream of a world-class Metro Rail for Visakhapatnam remains stalled even after a decade of proposals. Despite being a crucial infrastructure project for the state’s primary economic hub, the Vizag Metro Rail Project DPR Status 2026 shows significant hurdles in terms of design approvals and financial allocations.

Funding Crisis for Land Acquisition: The project requires nearly 99.75 acres of land, including 7.5 acres of private property in high-density areas like Thatichetlapalem and Chinna Waltair. The acquisition of these private lands is estimated to cost around Rs. 600 crores. Since the landowners have strictly demanded cash compensation instead of TDRs, the AP Metro Rail Corporation Limited (APMRCL) has requested the state government to sanction these funds immediately to initiate ground-level work.

Center Rejects Double-Decker Proposal: The alliance government’s recent proposal for a ‘Double-Decker’ model—integrating a four-lane flyover with a metro track on top—has been rejected by the Central Government. Citing the lack of a successful precedent in the country, the Center advised against such experiments and asked for a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR). Consequently, APMRCL and NHAI are set to conduct a fresh joint survey. The project’s future, which aims to connect the city to the upcoming Bhogapuram Airport via NH-16, now hinges on the approval of the revised DPR and the immediate release of land acquisition funds by the state.
