In a major political development, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has declined the request of TVK chief Vijay to form the government. During a meeting held at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday afternoon, the Governor reportedly made it clear that the party must demonstrate the support of at least 118 MLAs to stake a claim. This decision has prolonged the political suspense regarding the formation of the new government.
At present, TVK, with the support of Congress, holds a strength of 112 MLAs. However, since Vijay won from two seats and must vacate one, the party’s effective strength stands at 107. Along with Congress, they are still 6 MLAs short of the required majority. While there are talks of a faction from AIADMK and other smaller parties like PMK and CPI showing interest in supporting TVK, no official confirmation has been presented to the Governor yet.

The political landscape is now dependent on smaller parties such as PMK, IUML, and Left parties, who hold a combined handful of seats. Although the probability of gaining their support is high, Vijay must secure official letters of endorsement to cross the hurdle.
