New Delhi: In a landmark move to strengthen strategic ties, India and South Korea on Monday agreed to significantly expand cooperation in shipbuilding, maritime logistics, and port infrastructure. Following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lee Jae Myung, the India South Korea Maritime Cooperation 2026 framework was established to bolster India’s maritime ambitions. The highlight of the agreement is the synergy for India’s plan to procure over 400 vessels, valued at approximately USD 25 billion (Rs 2.2 lakh crore).
The collaboration will focus on upgrading Indian shipyards through brownfield expansion and developing advanced facilities for large, specialized vessels. Leveraging India’s financial incentives, Korean firms are encouraged to invest in the domestic manufacturing of shipbuilding components. Furthermore, the agreement promotes the use of GIFT City for vessel flagging and flexible ownership norms. Both nations also inked MoUs for port modernization projects worth USD 13.3 billion, including the strategic Vadhvan port in Maharashtra. Beyond industrial growth, the partnership extends to skill development and academic research in green shipping and autonomous vessels, while celebrating shared maritime history through projects like the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal.
