The Bangladesh government has explicitly stated its intention to secure the repatriation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through formalized “legal procedures.” Responding to her recent assertions from exile expressing hope to return home “very soon,” Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed addressed the media. He emphasized that the administration aims to facilitate her return through official legal frameworks, asserting there are no legal obstacles preventing her return to face the judiciary.
She has been residing in India since August 2024, following the collapse of her Awami League administration during a massive student-led mass uprising. The subsequent transitional authorities banned the political party and initiated prosecution against her in the reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal. Consequently, she was handed a death sentence in absentia in November 2025, a ruling that the newly instated government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman continues to uphold through diplomatic channels.
Surrender to the Judiciary
Reinforcing this stance, the Prime Minister’s information affairs adviser, Zahedur Rahman, clarified that no “extra-judicial measures” would be executed against the ousted leader upon her arrival. However, he maintained that Sheikh Hasina must unconditionally “surrender to the judiciary” and confront the ongoing legal challenges mounted against her. Legal experts noted that deadlines to formally challenge the tribunal’s severe verdict have already lapsed.
Concurrently, Home Minister Ahmed commented on India’s internal policies, specifically the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). He reiterated that these legislative mechanisms remain strictly within India’s internal domain, leaving no scope for external commentary from Dhaka. Nevertheless, he confirmed that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) remains stationed on high alert to strictly prevent any illegal cross-border infiltration.
