భారత భద్రతలో ‘Chicken Neck Corridor’ ఎందుకు అంత కీలకం?

భారతదేశ భౌగోళిక నిర్మాణంలో అత్యంత సున్నితమైన ప్రాంతాల్లో “చికెన్ నెక్ కారిడార్” లేదా “సిలిగురి కారిడార్” ఒకటి. పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్‌లోని ఈ సన్నని భూభాగం ద్వారా అస్సాం, అరుణాచల్ ప్రదేశ్, మణిపూర్, నాగాలాండ్, మిజోరం, మేఘాలయ, త్రిపుర వంటి ఈశాన్య రాష్ట్రాలు మిగతా భారతదేశంతో అనుసంధానమై ఉంటాయి. అందుకే దీనిని ఈశాన్య భారతదేశానికి “జీవనాడి”గా అభివర్ణిస్తారు.

ఈ కారిడార్ కొన్ని ప్రాంతాల్లో కేవలం 20-22 కిలోమీటర్ల వెడల్పుతో మాత్రమే ఉండటం దీనిని వ్యూహాత్మకంగా మరింత సున్నితమైన ప్రాంతంగా మార్చింది. ఒకవైపు నేపాల్, మరోవైపు బంగ్లాదేశ్, సమీపంలో భూటాన్, చైనా ప్రభావం ఉండటంతో ఈ ప్రాంతం భద్రతా పరంగా ఎప్పటి నుంచో కేంద్ర సంస్థల దృష్టిలో ఉంది.

కేంద్ర భద్రతా పట్టు ఎందుకు పెరుగుతోంది?

ఇటీవలి కాలంలో ఈ ప్రాంతంలో బోర్డర్ సెక్యూరిటీ ఫోర్స్ (BSF) కార్యకలాపాలు విస్తరించేందుకు చర్యలు వేగవంతమవుతున్నాయి. జాతీయ రహదారి మార్గాల అభివృద్ధి, భద్రతా మౌలిక వసతుల విస్తరణ, కంచె నిర్మాణం వంటి అంశాలు చర్చకు వచ్చాయి. దీనివల్ల ఈశాన్య రాష్ట్రాలకు రవాణా, రక్షణ, అత్యవసర సేవలు మరింత సమర్థవంతంగా చేరే అవకాశం ఉందని భద్రతా నిపుణులు భావిస్తున్నారు.

ప్రత్యేకంగా బంగ్లాదేశ్ సరిహద్దు ప్రాంతాల్లో అక్రమ చొరబాట్లు, మాదకద్రవ్యాల రవాణా, నకిలీ కరెన్సీ కార్యకలాపాలు వంటి సమస్యలను నియంత్రించడంలో ఈ చర్యలు కీలకమవుతాయని విశ్లేషణలు చెబుతున్నాయి.

రాజకీయ వివాదాల కేంద్రంగా సిలిగురి కారిడార్

పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ రాజకీయాల్లో కూడా ఈ ప్రాంతం తరచూ చర్చకు వస్తోంది. కేంద్రం-రాష్ట్రం మధ్య భద్రతా అంశాలపై విభేదాలు గతంలో పలు సందర్భాల్లో బయటపడ్డాయి. బీజేపీ నాయకులు మమతా బెనర్జీ ప్రభుత్వంపై సరిహద్దు భద్రత విషయంలో నిర్లక్ష్యం వహించిందని ఆరోపిస్తుండగా, తృణమూల్ కాంగ్రెస్ మాత్రం కేంద్రం రాజకీయ ప్రయోజనాల కోసం భద్రతా అంశాలను ఉపయోగిస్తోందని విమర్శిస్తోంది.

అయితే గమనించాల్సిన విషయం ఏమిటంటే—ప్రస్తుతం పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా ఇంకా Mamata Banerjee కొనసాగుతున్నారు. Suvendu Adhikari ప్రస్తుతం ప్రతిపక్ష నాయకుడిగా ఉన్నారు. అందువల్ల “రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం మారింది” లేదా “సువేందు అధికారి సీఎం అయ్యారు” అనే వాదనలకు అధికారిక ధృవీకరణ లేదు.

టీఎంసీ కార్యకర్తలు ఆధార్ కార్డులను నిల్వ ఉంచి రాజకీయ ప్రత్యర్థుల ఓటింగ్‌ను ప్రభావితం చేశారనే ఆరోపణలు రాజకీయ వర్గాల్లో వినిపిస్తున్నాయి. అయితే ఈ ఆరోపణలపై అధికారిక విచారణలు, కోర్టు తీర్పులు లేదా ఎన్నికల సంఘం తుది నిర్ధారణలు ఇంకా ప్రజా డొమైన్‌లో స్పష్టంగా లేవు. అందువల్ల ఈ అంశాలను రాజకీయ ఆరోపణల కోణంలోనే చూడాలి.

చికెన్ నెక్ కారిడార్ భద్రత కేవలం సరిహద్దు పరిరక్షణకు మాత్రమే సంబంధించిన విషయం కాదు. ఇది భారత ఆర్థిక వ్యవస్థ, సైనిక వ్యూహాలు, ఈశాన్య రాష్ట్రాల అభివృద్ధి, అంతర్జాతీయ వాణిజ్య మార్గాల పరంగా కూడా కీలక కేంద్రం.

భవిష్యత్తులో రహదారి విస్తరణ, రైల్వే ఆధునీకరణ, స్మార్ట్ సర్వైలెన్స్ వ్యవస్థలు, సరిహద్దు కంచె నిర్మాణం వంటి చర్యలు వేగవంతమైతే ఈ ప్రాంతం భారత వ్యూహాత్మక బలాన్ని మరింత పెంచే అవకాశముంది.

The “Chicken Neck Corridor,” officially known as the Siliguri Corridor, is one of India’s most strategically sensitive regions. This narrow strip of land in West Bengal connects mainland India with the eight northeastern states, making it a lifeline for connectivity, trade, military logistics, and governance.

At certain points, the corridor is barely 20-22 kilometers wide. Surrounded by Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and close to China’s sphere of influence, the region carries enormous geopolitical significance.

Strengthening Security Infrastructure

Recent developments indicate increased focus on strengthening security and infrastructure in the corridor. Expansion of BSF operational access, highway modernization, fencing initiatives, and strategic mobility projects are aimed at improving surveillance and ensuring uninterrupted connectivity with Northeast India.

Security experts believe these measures are crucial for countering illegal infiltration, narcotics smuggling, counterfeit currency networks, and potential cross-border threats from sensitive frontier regions.

Political Tensions Around the Corridor

The Siliguri Corridor has also become a politically charged issue in West Bengal. BJP leaders have repeatedly accused the Mamata Banerjee government of being soft on border security issues, while the Trinamool Congress has countered that the Centre uses national security narratives for political gain.

Importantly, Mamata Banerjee remains the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari currently serves as Leader of Opposition. Claims suggesting a change of government in the state are not officially established.

Allegations Over Aadhaar and Electoral Manipulation

There have been political allegations that Aadhaar cards and voter-linked documents were withheld in certain areas to influence electoral participation. However, these claims remain politically contested, and no conclusive nationwide legal determination has publicly validated such allegations.
